Beilby Porteus was the third Bishop of London, serving from 1674 to 1683. He was born in 1620 at Chard, Somerset, the son of a yeoman. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and was ordained in 1645. After holding several livings he became Bishop of London in 1674
